History of BBG

Growing from its humble beginnings as an ash dump in the late 1800s, Brooklyn Botanic Garden has come to represent today the very best in urban gardening and horticultural display.

Here is a chronology of important dates and developments in the Garden’s history. It is illustrated with photos from our archives taken by Louis Buhle between 1915 and 1968. These charming black-and-white photos capture the evolution of the Garden and the spirit of the times.

Hours & Admissions

Free on Tuesdays all day and Saturdays from 10am to 12pm. Everyday is free for children under 12, school groups, seniors, Fridays year-round and Winter weekdays (November 8 – March 11). If you visit the garden, shirts and shoes are required. Read more on the site of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.

Cherry Esplanade The Cherry Esplanade is a broad green field bordered by two allées of the dazzling Prunus ‘Kanzan’. One of the highlights of the cherry blossom season, these double-flowering cherries typically bloom at the end of April and are a centerpiece of the Garden’s annual cherry blossom festival, Sakura Matsuri.
BBG's Annual Border, two long beds located on the western side of Lily-Pool Terrace, offers a new display of annual plants each year. In April a colorful blossoming of over 6,000 tulips is one of the most vibrant signs of spring in the Garden. Designed and planted in the fall, each spring the tulip display features new varieties and planting designs.
