Saturday, June 29, 2013. New York City – Today was the 21st Annual NYC Dyke March. Hundreds of lesbians and friends marched from Bryant Park to Washington Square Park, Downtown, Manhattan.

"Fuck marriage"

On Facebook, they say, “The Dyke March is a protest march, not a parade — we don’t ask for a permit, because we have the right to protest. We recognize that we must organize amongst ourselves to fight for our rights, our safety, and for visibility. Thousands of dykes take over the streets every year in celebration of LBTQ women and to protest against ongoing discrimination, harassment, and anti-LBTQ violence in schools, on the job, in our families, and on the streets.”

Tomorrow, Sunday, June 30, its the PRIDE march in NYC. Begins at 36th St. & Fifth Ave. and ends at Christopher & Greenwich Streets.

This year the Grand Marshals are Edie Windsor, Harry Belafonte and Earl Fowlkes.

The first March was held in 1970 and has since become an annual civil rights demonstration. Over the years its purpose has broadened to include recognition of the fight against AIDS and to remember those we have lost to illness, violence and neglect.

“This year we’re joined by over 300 unique marching contingents, representing a vast array of non-profits, community organizations, corporate sponsors, small business, political candidates and activists! With over 50 floats prepped to make the trek down 5th Avenue, this year’s March will be one of the largest and most exciting in history,” organizers say on their website NYCPRIDE.org.
